Perspectives on
a Journey
This body of work explores the gemstone microcosm to question our societies and environment. Blending human stories with geographical and geological references, it advocates for minority inclusion and planetary protection. Beyond its philosophical reflection on humanity and the universe, the work serves a scientific purpose, testifying to our planet's genesis and diversity.
These microscopic landscapes, with their abstract scales, evoke a 'surnaturalism' akin to early surrealism, acting as a mirror to the imagination and a vessel for introspection. Ultimately, stones embody a timeless, multicultural history that bridges science, art, and the human spirit from the dawn of time.

Muyal
Jonathan Muyal is a gemologist and a visual artist whose work bridges science, art, and society. Holding a Master's in Fine Arts from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, Muyal seeks to reveal the invisible microscopic world and the universal nature of gemstones—themes too profound for a purely scientific lens.
Shaped by his multicultural background and international journey, his award-winning work offers a philosophical introspection into the stones and the human experience.

An Initiatory Journey
to the Microcosm of Gems
The 'Quest for Gems' begins with a journey of initiation: sourcing raw materials amidst hardship and humility, engaging with extraction communities, and discovering geographical origins. This foundational stage transitions into a tactile relationship with the raw material, where patience and a critical eye are required to navigate the stone's physical properties.
Accessing the microcosm is an adventure of overcoming obstacles, yet the ultimate challenge remains its elusiveness—its resistance to capture. While technical limits exist, ingenious methods bridge the gap between the macrocosm and the microscopic, drawing the traveler into realms of the imagination.
Production
Each final image is the culmination of hundreds of individual photomicrographs, hundreds of hours of work, and thousands of kilometers traveled. It embodies sweat, tears, and the joy of approaching, witnessing, and capturing a few microns of the infinite microcosm.
