Internal Worlds
Hidden in Stone
Beyond the visible surface of a gemstone lies an entire universe of geological history. Through advanced optics, we reveal inclusions—trapped crystals, gas bubbles, and fractures—that tell the story of a stone's formation over millions of years.
Jonathan
Muyal
With a foundation rooted in advanced optical physics and the disciplined heritage of classical photography, Jonathan Muyal occupies the rare intersection of scientist and artist.
His work is a relentless pursuit to reveal the "hidden calculus" governing the microscopic realm. To Muyal, these are not merely geological accidents, but the "unseen soul" of the earth, trapped within crystallized time.
"In the smallest void, I find the infinite."

Beyond the
Human Eye
To capture the crystalline structures at this scale requires a marriage of high-end scientific optics and precision digital capture systems. We utilize a Nikon Eclipse polarizing microscope, retrofitted with specialized stage controllers.
Our imaging pipeline utilizes Phase One medium format digital backs, capturing up to 150 megapixels of raw spectral data for every individual frame.
Focus Stacking
Each final image is a composite of 50 to 200 individual exposures, each captured at a slightly different focal plane (spaced 2 microns apart) to achieve total sharpness from foreground to infinity.
